One good way to understand big numbers is to see them step by step. In this tool every stop is about ten or a hundred times bigger than the one before. You begin with a view near your home, then the Earth and the Moon, then the planets around the Sun, then the stars nearby, and then the whole Milky Way galaxy, which is about 100,000 light-years across.
A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, which is about 9.5 trillion kilometres. That sounds huge, and it is! Light from the Sun takes just over 8 minutes to reach us, but light from the next closest star takes more than 4 years. The part of the universe we can see is about 93 billion light-years wide and holds hundreds of billions of galaxies.
Use the slider or your mouse wheel to zoom by yourself, or choose Guided mode to pause at each stop and read a short fact. The travel box tells you how long a walk, a plane or a rocket would take to reach each place, and the quiz at the end checks what you remember. You can also press the share button to copy a link to the exact place you are looking at.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is the universe?
Nobody knows its full size. The part we can observe is about 93 billion light-years across. The whole universe may be much bigger, or even endless.
What is a light-year?
A light-year is a distance, not a time. It is how far light travels in one year, which is about 9.5 trillion kilometres.
How many stars are there in the Milky Way?
Scientists estimate that the Milky Way has somewhere between 100 and 400 billion stars, and our Sun is just one of them.
Is the Earth in the middle of the universe?
No. The Earth goes around the Sun, the Sun is in one arm of the Milky Way, and the Milky Way is only one of the galaxies in the universe. The universe has no special centre we can point to.
Why does the Moon look so close in the zoom?
Because of the scale. The Moon is about 384,000 km away, which is close compared with the Sun at 150 million km. As you zoom, bigger distances make the smaller ones shrink out of sight.
