A young shepherd boy watched over his village's sheep every single day on a quiet, lonely hillside just outside the village. The days often felt long, slow, and more than a little boring for someone so young.
One day, feeling especially restless and eager for some excitement, he ran down toward the village shouting, "Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is attacking the sheep!" as loudly as his voice would allow.
The villagers dropped everything they were doing and rushed up the hill to help, sticks and tools in hand, only to find no wolf at all. The boy laughed and laughed at how easily he had fooled them all.
A few days later, feeling bored once again, the boy played the very same trick, shouting for help just as before. The villagers came running again, hearts pounding - and once again, there was no wolf anywhere in sight.
Then one evening, as the sky turned orange with sunset, a real wolf actually appeared from the trees and began attacking the sheep. Truly frightened this time, the boy ran toward the village shouting with all his might, "Wolf! Wolf! Please help me, it's real this time!"
But the villagers, tired of his past tricks and no longer trusting a single word from him, simply ignored his desperate cries and stayed comfortably at home, certain it was just another one of his jokes.
Sadly, the boy learned that evening that once trust is broken through repeated lies, it becomes very hard to win back - especially in the exact moment you need it the most.
