A hare was known throughout the forest for being the fastest runner anyone had ever seen. He often boasted about his speed to anyone who would listen, and made fun of the slow-moving tortoise, who never seemed bothered by the teasing.
Tired of being laughed at day after day, the tortoise finally worked up the courage and challenged the hare to a race. All the animals gathered along the path to watch, quite certain that the hare would win with ease.
The fox blew a whistle to start the race, and the hare shot forward like an arrow, kicking up dust behind him. Within moments, he had left the tortoise far, far behind and was quickly out of sight.
Confident he had plenty of time to spare, the hare decided to rest under a shady tree along the way. "The tortoise is so slow," he thought with a grin. "I can take a little nap and still win easily."
Before long, the hare had drifted off into a deep, comfortable sleep. Meanwhile, the tortoise kept walking steadily, one slow step after another, never once stopping to rest or look back.
When the hare finally woke up with a start, the sun was already beginning to set. Panicked, he dashed toward the finish line as fast as his legs could carry him.
But it was too late - the tortoise had already crossed the finish line, to the delight of the cheering crowd. The hare hung his head, having learned an important lesson that day about patience, and about never taking anything for granted.
