Black Hole for Kids: Take a Safe Trip In!

Black Hole for Kids: Take a Safe Trip In!

Spin it, bend the light, and fall in - no spaceship needed

A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so hard that even light cannot get out. Here you can look at one from every side, see how it bends the stars behind it, and press "Fall in" to find out why time seems to slow down near it. Everything happens on your screen, so nobody gets hurt!

🗜️ Squeeze it into a black hole

Any object can become a black hole if it is squeezed small enough. How small? Pick one:

🧠 Test yourself

Black holes sound scary, but they are one of the most amazing things in space. This page lets children explore one safely. Drag the picture to turn the black hole around, and notice the bright ring of glowing gas, called the accretion disk, and the dark round shadow in the middle. That shadow is the edge of the black hole, the point where nothing can come back.

Press "Fall in" and watch the time readout on the screen. As you get closer, time ticks slower and slower for you compared with a friend far away. Scientists call this gravitational time dilation, and it is a real effect that has been measured with very accurate clocks. At the end you will cross the event horizon, and the screen goes dark.

Want to know how a black hole is made? Use the "Squeeze it" box. It shows how small the Sun, the Earth or even a giant star would have to become to turn into a black hole. The Sun would shrink to about 3 kilometres across, and the Earth to the size of a peanut. When you are ready, take the short quiz and see how many answers you get right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What is a black hole in simple words?

A black hole is a place where a lot of matter is squeezed into a very small space, so its gravity is incredibly strong. Gravity near it is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape once it gets too close.

Q

Can a black hole swallow the Earth?

No. The nearest known black holes are many trillions of kilometres away, and a black hole does not suck things in from far away. It pulls on things only like any other object with the same mass would.

Q

Why does the black hole look like it bends light?

Strong gravity bends the path of light. That is why stars behind the black hole look stretched into rings and arcs around it. This is called gravitational lensing.

Q

Why does time slow down when I fall in?

The closer you are to a very strong source of gravity, the slower your clock ticks when compared with a clock far away. The page shows a time readout that changes as you get closer, so you can see the difference.

Q

Is this a real photo of a black hole?

No. It is a computer simulation based on Einstein's ideas about gravity. Real black holes are photographed by telescopes, but they appear as small, fuzzy rings, so this simulation helps you see what is going on.
