🚀 Building the Solar System…
📅 -
Drag to rotate · Scroll or pinch to zoom · Tap a planet

Our solar system is made of the Sun, eight planets, their moons, and lots of smaller rocks. The four planets closest to the Sun - Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars - are small and rocky. Jupiter and Saturn are giant balls of gas, and Uranus and Neptune are icy giants far out in the cold. Seeing them together in 3D helps children understand how different they are in size and distance.

Tap any planet, or use the bar at the bottom, to fly close to it and read its size, day length, year length, temperature and a fun fact. Did you know that a year on Mercury is just 88 days, but a day on Venus is longer than its year? Many surprises like these are waiting in the planet cards.

Use the speed menu to make days go by faster and watch the planets circle the Sun. Press "Today" to jump back to where they really are right now. You can also switch orbit lines, names, moons and the asteroid belt on or off, and choose between compact and realistic distances - in real life the planets are very, very far apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How many planets are in the solar system?

There are eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Q

Which planet is the biggest?

Jupiter is the biggest planet. More than 1,300 Earths could fit inside it.

Q

Which planet is the hottest?

Venus is the hottest planet, with a temperature of about 465 degrees Celsius, even though Mercury is closer to the Sun. Its thick clouds trap heat like a blanket.

Q

Why is "Realistic" so empty?

Because space is mostly empty. In the realistic view, the planets are drawn at correct relative distances from the Sun, so there is a lot of dark space in between.

Q

Are the planets really in these places today?

Yes. The page uses the device date and the orbit of each planet to place them roughly where they really are. Press "Today" any time to return to that view.
